Making Peace

Recently, I've been struggling with the inescapable fact of "growing old", and not liking it one bit.

Lorianne at Hoarded Ordinaries wrote about "the long view" today.

She talked about advice she offered to her Zen students who came for interviews. They all had something that wasn't just right with their practice. She offered this lovely phrase, and I'm adopting it as my mantra

Make peace with what is
Thank you, Lorianne

I'm glad that advice was helpful: it's a hard teaching to master!

Aging is a cruel reminder of impermanence, so we fight it at every turn. Making peace with aging is counter-cultural, as we live in a day & age when youth is worshiped and old age is mocked. When folks say someone is "aging gracefully," what they usually mean is the person doesn't seem to be aging at all, because they've fought aging so convincingly. It's a real gift, I think, to encounter someone who actually looks and acts their age rather than trying to hide, disguise, or deny it.

I'm working on making peace with it. I wish you continued on with this blog, Janice. Thank you so much for visiting. Do you have a current blog too?
